I am the type of person who is always looking for a good deal. If I can’t use a coupon, or if it isn’t on sale, I will likely postpone the purchase.
However, I yearn for the lovely clothing, fabulous accessories, and lovely housewares that fashion and lifestyle tips dictate I must have. I struggle with wanting the immediate gratification of the item, and look for alternative ways to afford whatever it is.
For this reason, I am a thrift store shopper. I have traveled the country, and while I might not remember where I ate in San Francisco or what movie I saw while I was in Chicago, I can remember the second-hand and consignment shops quite vividly.
Fashion and lifestyle tips are helpful in determining the trends and fashions of the times, but they often involve money that I don’t have to spend. Thrift stores and second-hand stores level the playing field a bit.
I find that the big cities with some affluent neighborhoods frequently have the best items- often-designer items- at a fraction of the cost. When I began my love affair with Coach brand accessories some years back,
I came across a beautiful pair of gently used red Coach loafers in Pleasanton, California for $8. I found an Abercrombie and Fitch handbag for my niece in nearly-new condition at my favorite Goodwill Store in Newton, North Carolina. This is a “pay what it weighs” type retail outlet, so the cost was less than $1 for a cute bag that easily would have been $40 or more.
Many magazines have special sections dedicated to fashion, lifestyle tips- recreate these styles, and designs with refurbished items found at, you guessed it, a thrift store. A little paint, a little glue, a good laundering- often times the item is as good as new.
Don’t be quick to dismiss something that might just need a little TLC. Quality items are made to last, often a thorough cleaning can breathe new life into a great acquisition.
After a cross-country move, I furnished a fairly large home primarily from finds in the area thrift shops. My most expensive piece is probably my couch, which costs $30 at a Salvation Army store in Asheville, North Carolina. It is fabulous, by the way.
If you heed none of the fashion and lifestyle tips out there, heed this. Don’t ever drive by a garage sale again! These are virtual treasure-troves of finds, often being sold by people whose main goal is to get rid of the item.
As the saying goes, sometimes you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find a prince. Well, sometimes you will leave even a “good” yard sale empty handed.
That’s okay. The next time you pass a table of wares set up on the shoulder of the road; remember these fashion and lifestyle tips. Stop your car and channel the inner- explorer you have inside you. It might be the time you come across a fabulous vintage designer handbag for a dollar or two.
