Thrift stores and consignment shops are one great way to score big- particularly with designer brand, vintage fashion pieces.
I am particularly fond of Goodwill and Salvation Army stores for going on such a “treasure hunt”; the one I shop at most frequently operates with a “pay-what-you-weigh” modality, therefore, you can expect to spend pennies on the dollar- depending of course on the heft of the item.
For example, a small Coach clutch that I unburied from a pile of purses weighed a whopping 4 ounces. They charge $1.10 per pound of clothing and/or handbags- the cost was right around 30 cents.
A Coach handbag that had quite a bit of detailing- i.e. buckles, straps, etc. – weighed a whopping 2 pounds. I use this $2 Coach bag fairly regularly- perhaps even more than my Coach that cost me $300-400 retail.
Digging for treasures and vintage fashion finds doesn’t come without some cost. You do come across a lot of damaged beyond repair type pieces, as well as a lot of phony labels and knock-offs.
I have been duped into thinking that I had a designer bag in hand but with some research, discovered that I had a second-hand fake.
